Hawaiian Tropicals Direct is a dba owned by Smart Direct LLC. Michael Hughes and Yachi Li own and operate the company. We are always available to help our customers in any way we can.
Hawaiian Tropicals Direct was founded in 1995 when the first greenhouses were built on a virgin lava flow in beautiful Kapoho on the East side of Big Island of Hawaii.
Currently we are growing plants under approximately 257,000 square feet of covered space on our three parcels of land. There are two 5 acre parcels and one 4 ¼ acre piece. One of the 5 acre parcels is located near Pahoa at about 600 foot elevation. The other parcels are just above sea level. The covered growing areas are:
30,000 sq. ft. classic greenhouse
77,000 sq. ft. shade house
25,000 sq. ft. cupola style greenhouse
37,000 sq. ft. cupola style greenhouse
Office, packing and shipping utilize a 3,200 sq. ft. industrial building. A 2,000 sq. ft. building houses a tissue culture laboratory and a warehouse.
Our crew is made up of mostly long-term Filipino workers with a work ethic that is rare for these times. They posses a true desire to grow the best possible plants and diligently look after them.
